WILTON — Ridgefield Road is a designated scenic road. It is also a historic road having witnessed events of the revolutionary War leading to America’s independence.
Several of the houses that were built in the 18th century along this road remain to this day, spared ruin by British troops as they marched back to Westport after raiding Danbury. “The British passed quickly through Wilton on April 28 (1777), coming south on Ridgefield Road,” according to the website for the Wilton Historical Society. The Red Coats entered a handful of the houses, with were left undisturbed but for the theft of some items. “Samuel Keeler IV (652 Ridgefield Road) suffered the loss of several cows, carried off by the British,” the website said. Farther down the road at 274 Ridgefield Road “Samuel Middlebrook of Middlebrook Farm fled from his house with his wife and children, but the British entered, broke a large mirror and drained a hogshead of rum.”
Untouched was the red colonial house and two barns at 807 Ridgefield Road, which was built in 1756, 21 years before the unwelcomed visit of British troops. That local landmark has become known as “the red house with the big window,” according to its listing agents. It’s easy to see why. Visible from the street is a two-story window with 108 panes of glass topped by an arched window, which gives it the appearance of a Palladium-style window.
Extensive additions were made to this 2,719-square-foot house over the centuries and it has experienced some modernization. Although the house was restored it could use further updating to bring it into the modern era but it would be a mistake to lose any of this home’s historic character and original architectural features in the process. Those period details should be protected. They include period millwork, corner posts, numerous cupboards, wide-plank wood floors, hardware, and the central chimney with three fireplaces. Those fireplaces contain their original mantels, and one of them has a side beehive oven.
The main kitchen and bathrooms could use some renovation, but the structural integrity is intact and the mechanical systems are in good shape including windows, siding and the roof. The septic system is newer, from 2011, and was designed for five bedrooms.
This house is full of interesting and unusual possibilities within its unique configuration. Despite its vintage the main living level has spacious rooms suitable for living and entertaining. The family room, which features the two-story window, also has a cathedral ceiling, exposed beams, and a ceiling fan. On the second floor there is a window that looks down into this room.
Its two barns – one attached and one detached, also offer additional square footage of flexible-use space. The attached barn provides another 1,000 square feet of space, which could be a large workshop or an art studio, a ballet studio, or music rehearsal and recording space. Above this space there is an in-law or au pair suite. The detached barn serves as a garage and includes three vehicle bays.
